WHAT TYPE OF DECKING TIMBER SHOULD I CHOOSE?
TANALISED SOFTWOOD DECKING
Using a softwood, tanalised timber is the most commonly used decking for overall price, look and will last between 8 to 10 years before the timber naturally starts to break down. You can extend the life of decking with maintenance and an annual UV and preservative coating – details here
Softwoods such as pine and spruce will be the cheaper option, but must be properly treated with a wood preservative — as should any cuts in the wood. Cedar is an ideal softwood choice, being naturally weather-resistant but does have a cost implication
I normally source a Redwood pine, kiln dried to reduce splits or twists, pressure preservative treated protecting against rot, decay and insect attack. All tanalised decking starts its life with that green / straw type colouring from the tanalisation process before turning to a silvery grey colour.
- Cost effective.
- 8 to 10 year life span.
- Should be maintained to avoid slippy surfaces.
- Can be purchased as tanalised + waxed coating + anti slip strips.
HARDWOOD DECKING
A hardwood decking is hard-wearing, knot-free and much more pleasing to the eye with its different shades of orangey browns. Hardwood tends to be less slippy ~ still needs to be maintained ~ hence why used in the marine world.
Hardwoods have seen a growth in their popularity recently, with species such as oak and teak giving a stylish and contemporary feel, while also offering plenty of durability and stability, all essential qualities for timber decking to remain looking good. Birch, elm, maple and cherry are other good choices.
- Visually pleasing
- Is less slippery than a softwood but still needs to be maintained.
- Durable and strong
- Increased budget required.
